Zijn zachtmoedigheid uitstralen
We leven in een wereld waarin we er op getraind worden om voor onszelf op te komen. Als jou onrecht wordt aangedaan, moet je zorgen dat dat recht wordt gezet. Als je vooruit wilt komen, moet je zorgen dat je daadwerkelijk vooraan staat. Als je wilt winnen, moet je zorgen dat dat ook gebeurt, ook al vallen er slachtoffers. Hoe anders is Jezus: zachtmoedig en nederig van hart. Hoe anders ben jij? Is Jezus’ zachtmoedigheid de jouwe geworden? Heb je de moed om zacht-moed-ig te zijn? Want dat doet ook zeer. In zijn voetspoor mogen we het afleren om hier op aarde altijd als winnaar uit de bus te komen.
Heer, ik wil heel graag dat uw zachtmoedigheid de mijne wordt.

Christ Our Sin-bearer
He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
ISAIAH 53:5
Here we have Calvary unveiled. It is a holy scene depicting the greatest work ever done on earth, even by God. What is here described is the deep, mysterious transaction that took place in the darkness of the crucifixion day, when the Son of God died as our substitute and sacrifice. Isaiah mentions four particular aspects of that work.
First, the physical agony of the cross. Wounded, bruised, and stripes are all words that describe deep bodily pain. Wounded means pierced, or stabbed. Bruised means broken in pieces, or smitten most severely. Stripes are weals or bruises, the marks or prints of blows to Christs body. What unspeakable physical torment our Saviour endured! We should never be able to read of His bodily suffering without tears (see Psa. 22).
Second, the spiritual conflict of the cross. Wounding and bruising also denote the penetration of Christs heart with sorrow and the severe inward sufferings He bore. When men had done their worst, all hell sought to conquer Christ. Satan bruised His heel (Gen. 3:15), but, praise God, He bruised Satans head and spoiled principalities and powers, making a show of them openly (Col. 2:15).
Third, the penal sufferings of the cross. The chastisement of our peace was upon him. This was from the hand of His Father as He judged our sin in our sin-bearer. What a mystery! And, oh, what love, that God should so afflict His Son to spare His enemies!
Finally, the finished work of the cross. With His stripes we are healed. We have healing by virtue of the work of Christ alone. He paid our debt. He bore our judgment. He removed our curse. He cures our disease. He redeemed us to God. Hallelujah! What a Saviour!

For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
JOB 34:3
Elihu makes an important statement as to how people ought to formulate what they believe, especially in spiritual matters. As the mouth tastes food before the stomach receives it, so we ought always to test all we hear before we believe it.
One of mankinds most common sins is an inability to tell the truth. The wicked are estranged from the womb . . . , speaking lies (Psa. 58:3). If a person is noted for believing everything he hears, peoples opinion of him is not complimentary. He is classed as a simpleton, one without discernment or judgment. Deception is one of the traits of the human heart. If discretion is so important in worldly matters, it is even more vital in the spiritual realm. The Bible is filled with somber warnings against allowing ourselves to be spiritually deluded. Alongside the true gospel that upholds the true Christ in the power of the true Spirit, there is another gospel, energized by another spirit, proclaiming another Christ. When our Lord was asked questions concerning the last days (the age in which we live), the first exhortation He gave was, Take heed that no man deceive you (Matt. 24:4). One of the inspired proverbs of Holy Writ commands, Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge (Prov. 19:27).
The Bible is the reservoir of all spiritual truth. The death and resurrection of Christ form the basis and beginning of all spiritual light and life (Luke 24:26-27). Like the blessed man of Psalm 1, by meditating upon this inerrant guide of heavenly wisdom, we shall grow in grace and be enlightened and strengthened in our Christian experience and service. Thus we will be equipped to test all we hear and to discern the false from the true, and thereby be in a position to help others who are in danger of being carried away by every wind of doctrine.

The Attraction of the Cross
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
JOHN 12:32
We little understand the dreadful gulf between sinful men and the God of heaven until we begin to grasp how bitter the cup was which our Lord drained upon the cross. That cup of suffering and shame is what constituted the deep agony of Calvary. It reveals the twofold message of the crossthe curse of God upon sin and the only course out of sin.
The preaching of this message of Christs dying in the sinners place has moved the hearts of multitudes to flee from the wrath to come. The crucified Lord is the object of saving faith. In fact, there can be no saving faith where the bleeding Lamb of God is not set forth.
Paul the apostle depicted Christs death so vividly to the Galatians that he described his preaching as placarding Christ crucified before their very eyes (Gal. 3:1). Surely this is the secret to gospel preaching. The death of Christ must not be trivialized by the jargon of the salesman. It must not be hidden under the abstruse terms of vain philosophy. Rather it must be declared with plainness of speech. As Paul put it, our speech and preaching must not be with enticing words of mans wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power (I Cor. 2:4). We must go back to the original commission of lifting up the crucified Saviour. Only then will we enjoy the original power of the gospel in our churches and in our daily lives.
Do you feel a distance between your soul and the Lord? Then lift up the cross before your eyes, and by studying the crucified Christ you will know afresh His drawing power in your life.

The Battle Against Sin
Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them.
JUDGES 3:1
There were two distinct peoples in the land of Canaan: the heathen and the people of God. The Lord did not remove the enemy nations before Israel took possession of the land, but left them there to prove His people. The continued presence of the heathen, with the threat and temptation they presented, was intended to keep Israel in constant dependence upon the Lord and in perpetual separation from them.
These two peoples in Canaan remind us of the two natures in every believer. The old man is not eradicated when we are saved. His hatred of all things godly is not altered. He remains a bitter enemy of the Lord and of our enjoyment of our inheritance in Christ.
The old man must be opposed. We must make no provision for him. Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof (Rom. 13:14). The fact that the old man still resides within us is no licence or excuse for sin.
The way to victory over indwelling sin is to keep the way of the Lord to walk therein (Judg. 2:22). A life of holiness is not achieved through a single decision. Victory over sin is never once and for all. The Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily, or speedily (v. 23). Our battle with sin must be constant. Our mortification of the flesh must be daily. The proof of the reality of our walk with God will be our attitude to our old man. He who pampers and provides for the flesh and smiles upon his own sin deceives himself if he thinks he is walking with God.
Like Israel in todays text, we have received our inheritance without any personal effort, but we can enjoy its rich fulness only as we faithfully battle the fleshly lusts that war against our souls.

Heerlijkheid
Er is een nauw verband tussen lijden door de naam Christus en de aanwezigheid van de heerlijkheid van de Geest. Als Hij op je rust, zul je smaad lijden om de Naam van Jezus. Zo horen lijden en heerlijkheid helemaal bij elkaar. Omdat de Geest en Christus helemaal bij elkaar horen.

Joy Is Abounding
Rejoice in the Lord alway.
PHILIPPIANS 4:4
Paul was growing old. The sufferings he had experienced had certainly taken their toll. Yet despite the catalogue of afflictions he had endured while preaching the gospel of Christ, he had not lost his sense of the vibrancy of life. The words joy and rejoice (which is a variant form of the word joy) occur sixteen times in this epistle.
These words express triumph in the face of the disappointments and hardships of the Christian life. The command Rejoice in the Lord alway sounds the keynote of the entire epistle. The Christian can rejoice at all times and under all circumstances, because the source of his joy is the Lord. Thus rejoicing, like joy, is supernatural. It issues from the very nature of God and is intended to well up within those in whom Gods Spirit dwells.
Those who have trusted Christ have the privilege of experiencing fulness of joy (Psa. 16:11). The Man of sorrows was possessed of a deep joy. As He faced the cruel death of the cross, He said to His followers, These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full (John 15:11).
The unusual thing about Pauls situation was that there appeared to be no reason for him to rejoice. He was a Roman prisoner awaiting trial. He might be acquitted, or he might be beheaded. Yet in spite of his danger and discomfort, Paul overflowed with joy.
He could testify, I rejoiced in the Lord greatly (Phil. 4:10). All our joys must terminate in God, and our thoughts of God must be delightful thoughts. The psalmist said, Delight thyself also in the Lord (Psa. 37:4). Even in the midst of grievous and afflicting experiences he could say, In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul (94:19).
Earthly joys vanish, but when you rejoice in the Lord, you have something that lasts.

Laat dus niemand uwer moeten lijden als moordenaar, of dief, of boosdoener, of als een bemoeial.
