AMSTERDAM - De Aarde wordt koeler door een koude zeestroming in de Stille Oceaan. La Niña zorgt er voor dat delen van China te maken hebben met extreem lage temperaturen.

Dat meldt de NOS op basis van uitspraken van Amerikaanse meteorologen. La Niña zou er ook voor zorgen dat er in Australië ongewoon veel regen valt.

Het is voor het eerst dat er bewijs is voor de beïnvloeding van La Niña op het wereldwijde klimaat.

De temperatuur is de afgelopen tien jaar niet gestegen, blijkt uit de Amerikaanse berekeningen.

El Niño

De warme tegenhanger, El Niño, zou de temperatuur de komende vijf jaar weer doen stijgen. Dat is de verwachting van Britse weerkundigen.

Winter storm warning for
City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park continued

Heavy snow and blowing snow continues.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions...Listen for updated statements.



A deep low pressure system currently in southern Saskatchewan is tracking northwards slowly. This low pressure system continues to wrap warm moist air aloft into north and central regions of Alberta producing heavy snow. Latest satellite and radar imageries indicate that heavy snow bands have shifted further to the north than previously forecast. However the capital regions and the Lloydminster area can still receive up to 5 centimetres of snow by this evening. The rest of the warning areas will see generally 10 to 20 centimetres of snow by Tuesday morning.

In addition strong northerly winds associated with this low pressure system will continue to generate blowing snow and reduced visibilities in open areas.
