Stel uzelf niet langer in dienst van de zonde als een werktuig voor het onrecht, maar stel uzelf in dienst van God. Denk aan uzelf als levenden die uit de dood zijn opgewekt en stel uzelf in dienst van God als een werktuig voor de gerechtigheid.

Werktuig voor de gerechtigheid
Hoe denk je over jezelf? Sommige christenen zeggen: ik ben allereerst een zondaar, maar gelukkig mag ik door Christus telkens opnieuw vergeving ontvangen. En dat is ongelooflijk kostbaar! Maar als we Christus volgen en willen worden als Hij, dan mogen we ook zo over onszelf denken: als levenden die uit de dood zijn opgewekt, als mensen die niet langer slaaf van de zonde zijn maar een werktuig voor de gerechtigheid. Worden als Jezus betekent daarom ook: steeds verder groeien in de weg van de gerechtigheid, steeds meer de zonde haten en aan de zonde sterven. Totdat we Hem in volmaaktheid ontmoeten.
Heer, ik wil een werktuig zijn voor de gerechtigheid, in uw kracht.

God het alles wat Hy gemaak het, weggevee van die aarde af (vs 4). Alles is uitgewis.
Nou kom die redding. 'n Nuwe begin breek aan. Soos wat die water meer word is die ark opgelig en het dit begin opstyg bokant die aarde. Die ark begin dryf, sodat daar redding en lewe vir almal en alles aan boord is (Gen 7:23): “… Noag en dié by hom in die ark is gespaar.” Dit het gebeur omdat Noag in die geloof gedoen het soos die Here hom beveel het.
God haat die sonde! Sonde is ongehoorsaamheid aan God se wil. Daarom het ongehoorsaamheid altyd bittere gevolge. Jy kan nie goedkoop sondig nie. Maar God is ook genadig, barmhartig en vol liefde vir sondaarmense. Noag het in die geloof gehoorsaam en opgetree. Die redding van die ark wys vooruit na nog 'n groter wonder, naamlik die redding in Christus – vir jou wat glo! In Johannes 3:16 het ons die versekering: “Want so lief het God die wêreld gehad dat Hy sy eniggebore Seun gegee het, sodat elkeen wat in Hom glo, nie verlore mag gaan nie, maar die ewige lewe kan hê.”

A More Excellent Way
The greatest of these is charity.

Love, or charity, has rightly been called the queen of Christian graces. Paul states that the end of the commandment is charity (I Tim. 1:5). It is a grace essential to true godliness. Many believers could not discourse upon the deeper points of Christian doctrine, but all know something of love. It is the chief of virtues.
A person may be great in faith, or be a notable philanthropist, or possess outstanding wisdom and knowledge. He may be a gifted orator and expounder of Gods Word, but the absence of love is fatal to all of these gifts and negates their effectiveness.
Love is important, being the sum total of the law. The great commands direct our love first to God and then to our neighbour. On these, said Jesus, hang all the law and the prophets.
There are many mistaken views as to what love is. It does not involve just giving to the poor, as in the modern meaning of the word charity. It does not mean that one can never disapprove of anothers conduct or religious views. Sometimes the greatest expression of love is to point out error and to attempt to guide a person away from sin and towards God.
There is also a strange love in some pulpits today that commends the wicked and condemns the righteous, that protects the guilty and exposes the innocent, that thrives on ritual but has lost touch with reality, that says It is well when the soul is in fact on the broad road to destruction. The Lord pronounces His woe upon such love.
The first expression of the Christians true love should be to the One who first loved us, Jesus Christ. Then it should extend to our family members, those of the household of faith, and the ungodly whom we hope to reach with the gospel message. True Christian love is the root of all true Christian service. The love of Christ constraineth us (II Cor. 5:14).
Suspicions subtract, faith adds, but love multiplies. It blesses twice him who gives it and him who gets it.

The Burnt Offering
If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd.
LEVITICUS 1:3
The first chapters of Leviticus are taken up with detail of the five offeringsthe burnt, meat, peace, sin, and trespass offerings. All these offerings speak of Christ and His work of redemption. The burnt offering occupies a prominent position and pictures Calvary. Let us learn its unmistakable lessons.
The first lesson that comes to mind is that man is separated from God by reason of his sin. When man fell in sin, the communion between God and man was broken. The second lesson is that God speaks to man through a mediator. Moses acted as mediator between God and Israel, and a Greater than Moses is here, even Jesus Christ. The third lesson is that God demands a blood sacrifice. It may seem unpleasant to proud man, but God has the right to dictate the terms of reconciliation. Such extreme measures speak of the extremity and heinousness of mans sin. The fourth lesson is that the burnt offering pictures Calvary. The sacrificial animal or bird was a male. The first Adam brought death. The last Adam brought life. It was without blemish, speaking of the sinlessness of Christ. It was to be of the herd, telling of the accessibility of the sacrifice. Christ is near to all that call upon Him.
The offerer put his hand upon the head (v. 4) of the victim, identifying his sin with the sacrifice. The sinners touch always brings death. It was killed for him, teaching us the truth of the substitutionary sacrifice. It was a voluntary offering, picturing the voluntary nature of Christs death on the cross. It was to make at-one-ment, to reconcile lost sinners to God.
Let us rejoice this day in Christ our Saviour. We are not worthy of the least of His mercies, but He has blessed us with the greatest.

Hierbij plaats ik een gedeelte uit een preek van ds. J.W. Kersten over de vraag van de discipelen van Johannes de Doper of Jezus de Christus is of dat ze een ander verwachten. Johannes de Doper zag namelijk in het leven van Jezus het richterlijke niet (de bijl aan de wortel van de boom en de wan in Zijn hand zoals Johannes zelf had gepreekt). Johannes wilde nu het oordeel al, hij greep er op vooruit.
Nu zijn er kinderen Gods, die grijpen er ook op vooruit. Die zeggen: ‘Als ik nog zalig word, moet die zonde weg, dan wil ik heilig voor God leven, dan moet mijn bestaan geoefend worden in heiligmaking, dan moet ik meer lust hebben tot heiligheid en meer last van de zonde. Ik moet meer strijd hebben, ik moet de zonde eronder krijgen, en ik rust niet voordat ik volmaakt en heilig voor God mag leven’. Dan verwachten ze een uitwendige vorm, zodat ze merken kunnen dat die vijanden meer en meer ten onder komen. Dat richterlijke is er wel! Waar de Heere Jezus komt en Zijn ambtelijk bediening gaat verheerlijken, daar ontbreekt het richterlijke niet. Maar geheel anders dan Johannes het wenste en dacht.
En geheel anders dan Gods kinderen het denken. Weet u waarin dat richterlijke bestaat in de bediening van Christus? Dat ons hart zo boos blijft en dat de inwonende zonden zo sterk zijn, en dat we steeds groter zondaren worden na ontvangen genade, dat maakt ons zo verlegen voor Hem en dat brengt ons zo in de veroordeling voor Hem. De Heere zegt: ‘Ik zal maken dat ze een walg aan zichzelf hebben.’ Juist omdat er niets verandert in de waarneming van ons hart. Het wordt steeds erger en dat maakt dat we hulpeloos en ellendig tot Hem vluchten en zuchten, en dat we zeggen: ‘O God, ik ben de grootste der zonderen.’ Daar hebt u het richterlijke Gods. Dat is de zuiver geestelijke trek in het Koninkrijk Gods. Dat komt niet met uitwendig gelaat, maar dat is binnen ulieden. De zuiver geestelijke, richterlijke bediening van de Heere Jezus komt naar voren in een kind van God dat klagen en zuchten moet over zijn verdorvenheden en inwonende zonden; dat zijn hart zo stug is en zo onwillig, dat zijn gebed zo vormelijk is en dat hij niet komen kan zoals hij behoorde te zijn, en dat hij met die aanklachten bij de Heere komen en op zijn knieën valt en zegt: ‘O God, ik ben zo’n ellendig mens. Wie zal mij verlossen uit lichaam dezes doods?’ Groter zondaar worden en minder zonden doen.
Nu zijn er kinderen Gods, die grijpen er ook op vooruit. Die zeggen: ‘Als ik nog zalig word, moet die zonde weg, dan wil ik heilig voor God leven, dan moet mijn bestaan geoefend worden in heiligmaking, dan moet ik meer lust hebben tot heiligheid en meer last van de zonde. Ik moet meer strijd hebben, ik moet de zonde eronder krijgen, en ik rust niet voordat ik volmaakt en heilig voor God mag leven’. Dan verwachten ze een uitwendige vorm, zodat ze merken kunnen dat die vijanden meer en meer ten onder komen. Dat richterlijke is er wel! Waar de Heere Jezus komt en Zijn ambtelijk bediening gaat verheerlijken, daar ontbreekt het richterlijke niet. Maar geheel anders dan Johannes het wenste en dacht.
En geheel anders dan Gods kinderen het denken. Weet u waarin dat richterlijke bestaat in de bediening van Christus? Dat ons hart zo boos blijft en dat de inwonende zonden zo sterk zijn, en dat we steeds groter zondaren worden na ontvangen genade, dat maakt ons zo verlegen voor Hem en dat brengt ons zo in de veroordeling voor Hem. De Heere zegt: ‘Ik zal maken dat ze een walg aan zichzelf hebben.’ Juist omdat er niets verandert in de waarneming van ons hart. Het wordt steeds erger en dat maakt dat we hulpeloos en ellendig tot Hem vluchten en zuchten, en dat we zeggen: ‘O God, ik ben de grootste der zonderen.’ Daar hebt u het richterlijke Gods. ROMANS 5:1-2
In seeking to define grace, someone has turned this word into an acrostic, reading thus: Gods Riches At Christs Expense. That would be an apt summary of the fifth chapter of Romans. Having shown Gods method of justifying the ungodly through faith in Christs crosswork, Paul now reveals the riches of righteousness that belong to every believer in Christ.
We are, in the first place, reconciled to Godwe have peace with God. One day we were at war with God, alienated and enemies in [our] mind by wicked works (Col. 1:21). But through our Lord Jesus Christ, the mediator between God and men (I Tim. 2:5), all was changed! Christ our Priest took our sin away in His own body on the tree and covered us with His own spotless righteousness. Christ our Prophet, through His Word, made us see our state before God, convincing us of sin. Christ our King subdued our rebellious hearts and caused us to put down our weapons. Never will those reconciled experience what John called the wrath of the Lamb. Never will the believer feel the heat of hells flames, the darkness of the pit, or the unquenchable thirst of the damned.
But grace has also given us access to God. We ever stand in a state of acceptance before God. Not only is there peace between us and God, but there is fellowship. We can go directly and immediately into the Fathers presence. We can boldly approach the throne of grace without fear of rejection. After having failed the Lord in some way, we often feel that we cannot draw near to Him, that we must first make ourselves respectable. But grace will always keep the door of heaven open to the weakest of saints! We can, with Paul, rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand.

En dan gaat het niet over wat soms een keep-smiling-geloof of een happy-clappy-christendom wordt genoemd (hoewel er met lachen en klappen niets mis is), maar over een diepe vreugde die in ons is vanwege het door Jezus geliefd zijn. Niets geeft meer vreugde dan dat: weten en ervaren dat God je in Christus liefheeft. Dan kunnen je levensomstandigheden nog zo moeilijk en verdrietig en zorgelijk zijn, deze vreugde is blijvend, want op Christus gericht en van Christus ontvangen.
Heer, ik wil mijn vreugde vinden in U!

Often insurance companies refer to natural disasters as "acts of
God." Yet when the weather is perfect or the grass needs rain and
a shower comes, we say, "Wasn't it a lovely day?" or "That's great,
it rained." Aren't these "acts of God" too?
Perhaps the best and most consistent place to witness an "act of
God" is not in a tsunami or a volcano, but in a life transformed by
Jesus. Jesus came to change our lives from the inside out to a new
way of living in God. The Bible tells us that such a transformation
requires supernatural power.
What Does God Say?
"Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom
of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth
to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be
surprised at my saying, "You must be born again." The wind blows
wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the
Spirit"'" (John 3:5-8, NIV).
What human experience did Jesus compare such a radical
transformation to?
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV).
"Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith,
we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord
has done for us" (Romans 5:1, NLT).
"So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ
Jesus" (Romans 8:1, NLT).
According to the above verses, what are some of the results of a
changed life?

How do you experience the transforming work of God in your life?
First you believe. You believe that God loves you, that Jesus is
God's Son and that Jesus died on the cross to forgive your sins
and to establish a relationship with God as your Heavenly Father.
Second, you confess. You confess by praying. Tell God you know
that you've disobeyed Him and you need His forgiveness, that you
want to turn away from the things you've done wrong and follow
Him, that you believe Jesus died for you and your sins are forgiven
through Him.

Brokenness Before Blessing
The people lifted up their voice, and wept.
JUDGES 2:4
The people of Israel had good cause to weep. They had wilfully disobeyed the voice of the Lord. They had compromised with the idolatry of the nations they were sent to dispossess. They were going headlong to ruin, and so an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim to warn them of the inevitable consequence of their sin.
Gilgal was the place where the reproach of Egypt was rolled away (Josh. 5:9) and speaks to us of separation from sin. It was the place where flesh came under the execution of the sentence of death (W. Kelly). Israel had forsaken that separation just as too many Christians go easy on the flesh and fail to bring it under the power of the cross. Such compromise with sin calls forth divine chastening. Sin never makes happy Christians.
Bochim means weepers and signifies the place of sorrow for sin. Great as Israels sin was, it was not so great as that of many of us, for at least those Jews had grace enough to weep when confronted with their backsliding. More often than not we rationalize our sin, we excuse our compromise with the world, and we harden our hearts and do not weep.
Sin should break the heart of a Christian. Let us ask ourselves today, Does it break my heart? Do I not need to weep over broken vows and coldness of heart?
But weeping alone is not sufficient. We need to confess our sins and plead the merits of the blood of the Lamb for their remission. In Bochim Israel sacrificed unto the Lord and proceeded to enter into their possessions (Judg. 2:5, 6). So it is with us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (I John 1:9). Then we will enter into the enjoyment of our inheritance in Christ.
