I think that the pastor and Billy are both right.
'cause God loves the world (not the world of the elected!! :S) (John 3:16) He loves His creation.
He loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son...!
That whoever believe in His Name....will be saved...
So we are sinner 'cause in this bibleverse we see that we need salvation!
Otherwise we will not be saved!

And that part of that God hated Esau, have/has nothing to do with the election, I guess!
