Beautiful Hymns

Bericht door Arja »

William Cowper (1731-1800)
Cowper suffered from a mental illness that sometimes took frightening forms. Yet, he was grateful for the times of peace and joy the Lord granted him, no matter how brief and uncertain. These peaceful times gave him a chance to reflect on “the theme of God’s salvation” – a theme so comforting that he could say, “Let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may.” He wrote:

Sometimes a light surprises
In Dutch: Gezang 448
(Liedboek voor de Kerken 1973)

Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing in His wings;
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

2
In holy contemplation
We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God’s salvation,
And find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say—
E’en let the unknown morrow
Bring with it what it may.

3
It can bring with it nothing,
But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe His people too:
Beneath the spreading heavens
No creature but is fed;
And He, who feeds the ravens,
Will give His children bread.

4
Though vine nor fig tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear;
Though all the fields should wither
Nor flocks nor herds be there;
Yet God the same abiding,
His praise shall tune my voice,
For, while in Him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

Weerklank 513, Liedboek 910

1 Soms groet een licht van vreugde
de christen als hij zingt:
de Heer is ’t die met vleugels
van liefde hem omringt.
Loopt alles ons ook tegen,
Hij zal ons ’t goede doen,
Hij geeft na donkere regen
een mild en klaar seizoen.

2 Goddank, wij overdenken

  • How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
    (John Newton)

    1
    How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
    In a believer’s ear!
    It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
    And drives away his fear,
    And drives away his fear,
    And drives away his fear,
    It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
    And drives away his fear.
    2
    It makes the wounded spirit whole,
    And calms the troubled breast;
    ’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
    And to the weary rest,
    And to the weary rest,
    And to the weary rest,
    ’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
    And to the weary rest.
    3
    Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
    Our shield and hiding-place;
    Our never-failing treasury, filled
    With boundless stores of grace,
    With boundless stores of grace,
    With boundless stores of grace,
    Our never-failing treasury, filled
    With boundless stores of grace.
    4
    Jesus, our Savior, Shepherd, Friend,
    Our Prophet, Priest, and King;
    Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
    Accept the praise we bring,
    Accept the praise we bring,
    Accept the praise we bring,
    Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
    Accept the praise we bring.
    5
    Weak is the effort of our heart,
    And cold our warmest thought;
    But when we see Thee as Thou art,
    We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
    We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
    We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
    But when we see Thee as Thou art,
    We’ll praise Thee as we ought.
    6
    Till then we would Thy love proclaim
    With every fleeting breath;
    And triumph in that blessed Name
    Which quells the pow’r of death,
    Which quells the pow’r of death,
    Which quells the pow’r of death,
    And triumph in that blessed Name
    Which quells the pow’r of death.

Weerklank 458, Liedboek 446

1 O Jezus, hoe vertrouwd en goed
klinkt mij uw naam in ’t oor,
uw naam die mij geloven doet:
Gij gaat mij reddend voor;

2 uw naam die onze wonden heelt
en ons met manna spijst,
die onze dood en zonde deelt
en onze vrees verdrijft.

3 Mijn herder en mijn held, mijn vriend,
mijn koning en profeet,
mijn priester die mijn schuld ontbindt,
mijn weg waarop ik treed;

4 al wat ik doe, al wat ik wil,
het is te zwak, te koud,
maar sterk en vurig wordt de ziel
wanneer zij U aanschouwt.

5 Zolang Gij nog onzichtbaar zijt,
een zon diep in de nacht,
roep ik uw nadering reeds uit
omdat ik U verwacht.

6 O Jezus, hoe vertrouwd en goed
klinkt mij uw naam in ’t oor,
als ik van alles scheiden moet
gaat nog die naam mij voor.

7 O naam, eeuwige ademtocht,
een sterveling ben ik,
als eens mijn eigen adem stokt
dan draagt mij uw muziek.

Re: Beautiful Hymns

Bericht door J.C. Philpot »

Ik heb dit lied eens in de Westminster Chapel gezongen. Staat ook in Gadsby's hymns.

My hope is built on nothing less

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
Man is nothing: he hath a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven, till God worketh in him to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Deze hymn hoorde ik na het beluisteren van deze preek: Held and Holding Firmly, From Series: Life After Death https://www.truthforlife.org/resources/ ... ng-firmly/

He will Hold me fast

When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life’s fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast

Chorus:
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

Those He saves are His delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in His holy sight
He will hold me fast
He’ll not let my soul be lost
His promises shall last
Bought by Him at such a cost
He will hold me fast

Chorus
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

For my life He bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life
He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight
When he comes at last

Re: Beautiful Hymns

Bericht door J.C. Philpot »

Prachtig lied uit de 19e eeuw.

Before the throne of God above

1 Before the throne of God above,
I have a strong and perfect plea,
a great High Priest whose name is Love,
who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on his hands,
my name is written on his heart.
I know that while in heav'n he stands,
no tongue can bid me thence depart,
no tongue can bid me thence depart.

2 When Satan tempts me to despair
and tells me of the guilt within,
upward I look and see him there,
who made an end to all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died,
my sinful soul is counted free;
for God, the just, is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me,
to look on him and pardon me.

3 Behold him there, the risen Lamb,
my perfect, spotless righteousness,
the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace!
One with himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by his blood!
My life is hid with Christ on high,
with Christ, my Savior and my God,
with Christ, my Savior and my God.
Man is nothing: he hath a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven, till God worketh in him to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Ook mooi, van Charles Wesley.

And can it be that I should gain

1
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2
’Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love Divine!
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
3
He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace;
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
4
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
5
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness Divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Man is nothing: he hath a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven, till God worketh in him to will and to do of His good pleasure.

En van Horatius Bonar.

I heard the voice of Jesus say

1
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me, and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary, and worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting-place,
And He has made me glad.

2
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water: thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him.

3
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
And all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of life I’ll walk
Till trav’lling days are done.
Man is nothing: he hath a free will to go to hell, but none to go to heaven, till God worketh in him to will and to do of His good pleasure.

Trinity Hymnal
I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
He moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
It was not I that found, O Saviour true,
No, I was found of thee.

Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold;
I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea,—
'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
As thou, dear Lord, on me.

I find, I walk, I love, but, O the whole
Of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee;
For thou wert long beforehand with my soul,
Always thou lovedst me.
