Gisteren heb ik eindelijk THE COMPLETE WORKS OF THOMAS MANTON 22 VOLUMES binnen gekregen, ik denk dat voor deze week wel voldoende leesvoer heb! Had deze al enkele jaren geleden besteld (toen men met dit project wilde beginnen), en hebt toen maar iets van 175 eur. betaald, en dat is niet te veel voor 22 Hardback volumes.

C.H. Spurgeon wrote, "While commenting upon the One Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm, I was brought into most intimate communion with Thomas Manton, who has discoursed upon that marvellous portion of Scripture with great fulness and power. I have come to know him so well that I could choose him out from among a thousand divines if he were again to put on his portly form, and display among modern men that countenance wherein was a 'great mixture of majesty and meekness.' His works occupy twenty-two volumes in the modern reprint: a mighty mountain of sound theology. They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! For solid, sensible instruction forcibly delivered, they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown."

J.C. Ryle wrote a lengthy Introduction to the edition printed in the 19th century. He concluded with these words:

"It only remains for me to express my earnest hope that this new edition of Manton's works may prove acceptable to the public, and meet with many purchasers and readers. If any one wants to buy a good specimen of a Puritan divine, my advice unhesitatingly is, ' Let him buy Manton.' We have fallen upon evil days both for thinking and reading. Sermons which contain thought and matter are increasingly rare. The inexpressible shallownesss, thinness, and superficiality of many popular sermons in this day is something lamentable and appalling. Readers of real books appear to become fewer and fewer every year. Newspapers, and magazines, and periodicals seem to absorb the whole reading powers of the rising generation. What it will all end in God only knows. The prospect before us is sorrowful and humiliating.

In days like these, I am thankful that the publishers of Manton's Works have boldly come forward to offer some real literary gold to the reading public. I earnestly trust that they will meet with the success which they deserve. If any recommendation of mine can help them in bringing out the writings of this admirable Puritan in a new form, I give it cheerfully and with all my heart."

Maar inderdaad, hoe krijg je dat ooit gelezen.
Ik heb zelf een stuk of 40 vertaalde preken van Manton in het Nederlands en heb minder dan de helft gelezen.
Aan deze 22-delige serie begin ik dan ook maar niet vooralsnog.

Trouwens: Bij Manton moet ik ook aan Flavel denken, waarschijnlijk omdat het twee veelgelezen puriteinen zijn.
Maar Flavel vind ik persoonlijk wel wat gemakkelijker te lezen en houdt (bij mij tenminste) ook meer de aandacht vast.

Trouwens Spurgeon heeft alle werken van Manton gelezen, en hij behoorde tot de favourite schrijvers van Spurgeon.

Voor wie het wil weten: Veel losse nummers in Bibliotheek Overjarig Koren. Onder andere een lange serie preken over het gebed des Heeren. Daarnaast 2 boekjes met preken, één over de Verzoeking van Christus in de woestijn.

Wij lezen de oudvaders / puriteinen ook in het gezin, daar had mijn opmerking ook mee te maken. Voor ons gezin is Flavel wat geschikter dan Manton denk ik. Verder herken ik dat Manton soms dieper gaat is in zijn exegese.

De vergelijking met Owen vind ik moeilijk. Owen schreef namelijk heel ander soort werken, vooral dogmatische werken en een enkele uitlegkundige. De preken van Owen (zoals vertaald door C.B. van Woerden) vind ik ook vrij eenvoudig lezen.

Flavel is ook zeker de moeite waard, hoewel ik niet meer zijn complete works hebt, ik had deze ooit verkocht omdat ik geld nodig had voor andere boeken, maar mischien dat ik deze weer ooit ga kopen.

Je hebt zeker gelijkt je kunt je ook niet met elkaar verglijken. John Owen is voor mij de prins van de puriteinen, en als ik al een pagina van Owen hebt gelezen, dan is dat meestal al voldoende om te over denken m.n mortification of sin en zijn commentaar op Hebrews.
