The sermon was about Acts 8:
Theme: The proceeding of the Gospel by persecution, preaching and powerful signs.
1) Persecution: God often uses suffering for His purposes. The suffer of the persecuted christians and the joy of whom the Lord is gathering come together in a special way.
2) Preaching: The persecuted christians preach the Gospel. Every christian should be a witness. Always remember that the Gospel is good news, so be not afraid for people being offended.
3) Powerful signs: The accompanying miracles are not for entertainment, they always draw the attention the the Word. In this case the fall fo the Holy Spirit was a sign that Samaritans can also belong to the church, not only Jews.
For it was 30 October, attention was paid to the Reformation. Two lessons can be drawn from the Reformation:
1) Interpretation of the Scripture. Everyone must read the Bible, but the interpretation can be difficult. The worldwide church has the right to interpret, not one particular person or church.
Today many people say: 'back to the Bible'. That's right, but don't forget 2000 years of church history. Luther and Calvin are still relevant!
2) Salvation is a gift, no one should feel excluded, or be excluded by someone or some church.
'Ecclesia Reformata semper reformanda' doesn't mean the church has to be reformed to nowadays culture/ideas, but that we always have to check if our confession/church/life still agrees with the Bible.
The sermon was about 1 Cor. 2:1-5:
In 1 Cor. 1:17-31 Paul tells how God works. In 2:1-5 how Paul preaches.
Paul starts 4 times with I, against all rules. Packing the gospel with wordly wisdom/cleverness of speech distracts people from the gospel. Mixing the gospel with something attractive destroys the gospel. Adding things to the gospel is an insult to God.
Christ and Him crucified should be in every sermon. There is of course more, but Paul emphasizes this because of the special needs in Corinth (see 3:1).
Paul was not a persuasive or imposing speaker, he felt his own incompatibility. But that's not important, the question is if it's according Gods testimony.
His ultimate goal (again, not to be reached by tricks) is in verse 5: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
(This abstract is a little bit shorter because my jetlag hindered me quite a lot. : It felt like 2 o'clock in the night)
