Bedankt Helma!

En trek de doorontwikkeling van het beeld maar door voor het post-televisie tijdperk, want dat is dit in het kwadraat... wat hebben we toch waakzaam te zijn (zeg ik eerst en meest tegen mezelf).

In every step of our Christian growth and maturity, and throughout every aspect of our Christian obedience and service, our greatest foe is pride and our greatest ally is humility.

There is no duty we perform for God that sin does not oppose. And the more spiritually or holiness there is in what we do, the greater is its enmity to it. Thus, those who seek the most for God experience the strongest opposition.

William Perkins schreef: Sadly, some view election as a stumbling block to coming to Christ by faith. Unfortunately, their worry is not first “Have I Christ?” but rather “Am I elect?” Such have wrongly viewed election through a convoluted lens. It must be recognized that election is impossible to ascertain apart from the prior receiving of salvation by faith, upon which, with the resultant works, election is made sure (cf. 2 Peter 1:10). Furthermore, since Christ declares to all sinners, “Repent and believe, and you will be saved,” there need not be a question of one’s status, other than that of sinner. Thirsty sinners (Isa. 55:1); willing sinners (Rev. 22:17); heavy-laden sinners (Matt. 11:28); adulterous sinners (Jer. 3:1); lost sinners (Luke 19:10); and, yes, even the chief of sinners (1 Tim. 1:15)—to all the Lord declares, “Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men” (Prov. 8:4). Therefore, as the Lord is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, “Repent ye and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

A minister may fill his pews, his communion roll, the mouths of the public, but what that minister is on his knees in secret before God Almighty, that he is and no more.

You are either a Christian or you are not a Christian; you cannot be partly a Christian. You are either “dead” or “alive”; you are either “born” or “not born”.

Experiencing the New Birth

Many Christians experience uncertainty when it comes to understanding and relating to the Holy Spirit. Although our theology tells us that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, we may not always know how to connect this truth to the reality of our day-to-day lives. In this lecture, Dr. Reeves presents a helpful overview of the person and work of the Holy Spirit and the Reformers’ understanding that the Spirit is at the very heart of the gospel.
